Ghana Travel Tips for First-Time Visitors

Money, visas, transport, greetings, bargaining and the small practical things nobody tells you before you land.

Before you fly

Most visitors need a visa. Apply through the Ghanaian mission in your country well before you travel, and check the current requirements because they change. Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry and you will be asked for the certificate. Speak to a travel clinic about malaria prophylaxis, because Ghana is a malaria zone year-round.

Money

The currency is the Ghana cedi. Cards work in hotels, larger restaurants and supermarkets in Accra, but cash rules everywhere else. ATMs are widespread in cities and unreliable outside them, so draw cash before heading into the countryside. Mobile money is used everywhere by Ghanaians and is worth setting up if you are staying a while.

Getting around

Accra traffic is heavy and unpredictable. A journey that should take 20 minutes can take an hour, so build slack into your plans. Ride-hailing apps work well in the city. For longer distances, a private car with a driver is far more comfortable than public transport, and that is what our tours use.

Greetings matter

Ghanaians greet before they transact. Walking into a shop and immediately asking a question, without a good morning first, reads as rude. Learn ete sen, meaning how are you, and me ho ye, meaning I am fine, and watch how people respond to you. Use your right hand for giving, receiving and eating.

Bargaining

Markets and craft stalls expect negotiation. Supermarkets and restaurants do not. Bargain with good humour and a smile, because it is a conversation rather than a fight. If a price feels wrong, it is fine to walk away politely.

Dress and weather

Light natural fabrics, a hat and real sun protection. Ghana is close to the equator and the sun is stronger than it feels. Bring a light layer for air-conditioned vehicles and cooler hill areas like Aburi, and shoes you can walk and sweat in.

Water and food

Drink sachet or bottled water rather than tap water. Street food is one of the great pleasures of Ghana. Eat where there is a queue of locals and where food is cooked hot in front of you, and try waakye for breakfast at least once.

Photographs

Ask before photographing people, especially at markets, harbours and religious sites. Some sites charge a camera fee. Never photograph military installations, the airport perimeter or the presidential palace.
