The Best Time to Visit Ghana
Ghana is a year-round destination, but the season you choose changes what your trip feels like. Here is how the year actually breaks down.

The short answer
The most comfortable months for travelling in Ghana are November to March. The rains have finished, the roads are in good condition, and the coast is warm without being punishing. If you can only travel once, travel then.
Dry season: November to March
This is peak season for good reason. Days are hot and bright, rain is rare in the south, and every road on our itineraries is easily passable. December in particular is extraordinary. The diaspora comes home, Accra fills with concerts, festivals and weddings, and the whole city feels like it is celebrating. Book early for December, because hotels and guides fill up months ahead.
One thing to know: between December and February the harmattan wind carries fine dust south from the Sahara. It softens the light, cools the mornings and can leave the horizon hazy. Photographers either love it or plan around it. It is strongest in the north.
The rains: April to July
The main rainy season brings heavy afternoon downpours rather than all-day drizzle. Mornings are often clear, so tours still run and we simply start earlier. The countryside is green, waterfalls like Wli and Boti are at their most dramatic, and prices and crowds both drop. Bring a light rain jacket and shoes that dry.
August and September
A cooler, drier gap in the south with grey skies more often than rain. This is a good window for city tours, castles and cultural trips. It is also when Accra hosts Chale Wote, the street art festival that takes over Jamestown.
October
A short second rainy period, lighter than the main one, giving way to the dry season by the end of the month. Late October is a quiet, green, good-value time to travel.
What about the north?
Northern Ghana runs on a different rhythm, with one rainy season from roughly May to October and a hot dry season the rest of the year. For Mole National Park, the best wildlife viewing is in the dry months from December to April, when animals gather at the waterholes.
