The Best Adventure Activities in Ghana
Canopy bridges, ziplines, waterfall climbs, caves, surf and a mountain on the Togo border: what to do if sitting still is not your holiday.
Adventure · 20 December 2025
Ghana is not marketed as an adventure destination, which is exactly why the trails are empty. Everything below is achievable by a reasonably fit traveller and most of it is within a day of Accra.
Walk the Kakum canopy
Seven suspension bridges strung 40 metres above the rainforest floor, 350 metres end to end. Go early. If you are nervous about heights, the platforms between bridges give you somewhere to stop and breathe.
Zipline at Aburi
The closest real adrenaline to Accra: ziplines through the trees plus a high ropes obstacle course, 45 minutes from the city. Good for groups, teenagers and corporate teams.
Climb to the upper Wli Falls
The lower falls are a flat forest walk anyone can do. The upper falls are a genuine three-hour scramble up and over a ridge in the Volta Region, and the view down is the reward. Take a guide, water and proper shoes.
Summit Mount Afadja
Ghana’s highest peak at 885 metres, near the Togo border. Steep for about 90 minutes, then views across two countries. Start at first light before the heat.
Surf at Busua
Consistent, forgiving waves and local instructors who will have most beginners standing up within a session or two. Boards are hired on the beach.
Caves at Shai Hills
A short climb to the Hioweyo and bat caves in the rock hills east of Accra, with baboons and antelope on the plains below. Easy enough for families.
Canoe to Nzulezu
An hour by dugout canoe through reed channels in the Western Region to a village built entirely on stilts over a lake. More remarkable than strenuous.
Walking safari at Mole
Ghana’s only walking safari. You go out on foot with an armed ranger and, with luck, get closer to elephants than you expected to.
