Cape Coast and Elmina: Making the Journey

What to expect from Ghana’s castle sites, how to prepare emotionally, and how to choose between them.

Elmina Castle

History  ·  30 January 2026

For many visitors, especially those from the African diaspora, the castles of Ghana’s coast are the reason for the trip. They are not ordinary tourist sites and they should not be approached as if they were.

What these places are

Cape Coast Castle and St. George’s Castle at Elmina were fortified trading posts that became holding sites in the transatlantic slave trade. Hundreds of thousands of people were held in their dungeons before being forced through a doorway onto ships. Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and both are still standing largely as they were.

What a visit involves

You will be taken through the courtyards, the governor’s quarters, the church that sat directly above the dungeon, and then into the dungeons themselves: dark, low, airless rooms where people were held in numbers that are hard to comprehend standing in the space. The tour ends at the Door of No Return, facing the Atlantic. Guides are official and well trained, and most tours end with time to sit quietly.

Preparing yourself

Give the day nothing else. Do not schedule a beach afternoon afterwards. Eat before you go. Bring water. If you are travelling with family, talk beforehand about how each of you wants to handle it. Some people want to stay together, others need to be alone in the dungeons. Both are fine.

It is common to be overwhelmed. Our guides have accompanied many diaspora visitors through this and will give you space, sit with you, or step back entirely, whatever you need. There is no wrong reaction.

Choosing between them

Elmina is older, and its harbour full of painted canoes gives the day a second, joyful half. Cape Coast is larger, has the stronger museum and, for most visitors, hits harder. If you have one day, we usually suggest Cape Coast. If you have two, do both, on separate days.

Assin Manso

About an hour inland is Assin Manso, the Ancestral Slave River, where captives were washed before the final walk to the coast. It is quieter and less visited, and many people find it the more personal of the sites. It can be added to either castle day.
